Apparently it is real. There were very limited number of these made by Dutch company named Luchjenbroers. More pictures on their website.

These were liked by BMW so much that they created the actual E30 Touring (with extra doors) in production, if I'm not mistaken.

If I remember correctly the E30 Touring was born from certain BMW employees own private project.

Your mistaken, sorry. That honour goes to Max Reisböck , a BMW engineer from Münich. Not mentioned in that link but story goes that Max showed it to the Board of Directors just before he wanted to take it with him on a holiday trip but the car wasn't allowed off the factory premises after the demo.
